Gmail may soon introduce a temporary version of itself where temporary email addresses will be generated. This feature, known as “shielded email” is already discovered within the Google’s autofill of some users.
I think almost everyone knows how temporary email addresses work? A temporary email address is a disposable email service that provides you with a short-term, anonymous email address to receive messages without revealing your personal information.
These email addresses are generated instantly without requiring registration and are designed for one-time or limited use, often expiring after a set period or when manually deleted.
There are plenty of companies that offer such temporary email services online. Most even do it completely for free. Speaking of which, it’s kind of surprising that none of the major tech players have offered the service up until now. Maybe it’s time for Google to open the bridge for others.
If the feature was made available, we could see Google filtering mail from Shielded Email addresses to a different folder away from the primary inbox, much like how Gmail is organized into social, promotions, and updates folders.
However, the “Shielded Email” feature is only a conceptual thing spotted in a few text references and UIs and not something officially discussed in any capacity by Google. So, it might happen, but it might, just as likely, get axed. We’ll be sure to keep an eye on any developments.
